ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (7 bit code).

Asynchronous transfer
V24/RS232 transfer without acknowledge. Every member sends, if data are ready for transmission.

Byte
A group of bits, typically 8 bits.

CCITT
Comité Consultatif International Télégraphique et Téléphonique.

COM port
PC serial interface with even 9 or 25 pin D-SUB plug.

COM interface
PC serial interface with even 9 or 25 pin D-SUB plug.

DCE
Data Circuit Terminating Equipment ( see also German "DEE").

DEE
"Datenendeinrichtung", look DTE.

DTE
Data Terminal Equipment ( see also German "DÜE").

DÜE
"Datenübertragungseinrichtung", look DCE.

EBCDIC
Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (8 bit code from IBM).

FIFO-UART
Controller component with one or more bytes of buffer, which controls serial transmission in the PC.

HDLC
High Level Data Link Control (bit oriented control procedure for packet transmission from CCITT).

ISO
International Organization for Standardization.

Modem
DCE, which contains a modulator and demodulator to transmit data over a phone line channel or carrier frequency groups.

MSV
Medium Speed Version (byte oriented control procedure from Siemens).

RS232
Norm PC interface description

SDLC
Synchronous Data Link Control (bit oriented control procedure from IBM).

Synchronous transmission
V24/RS232 transfer with control level, eg. HDLC with acknowledgement.

UART
Controller component, which controls serial transmission in the PC.
